Loving an HIV+ Person (Part I)

by | Oct 10, 2018 | Living With HIV | 0 comments

Vivek Kishore lives in Gurgaon with his HIV+ partner.

When I recently accompanied my partner to an event, I was surprised at the number of questions people asked me.  I was prepared to play a supporting role but never imagined taking the centre stage and talking about my experience of loving and living with an HIV+ person.

Loving an HIV+ person

Some of the questions I was asked were so relevant that I decided to share them, along with my responses, in this two-part blog series. This one covers the emotional angle, while the second one will address all the practical aspects. It’s a very personal and honest story, so please bear with me!

Q. What was your reaction when you found out that your partner is HIV+?

I was surprised! But it subsided quickly. Yeah, I was quite crestfallen because he hadn’t been upfront with me. But my fear abated, and love prevailed. I believe true love endures in good times and bad times, ‘in sickness and in health’, so a small virus wasn’t going to come in our way.

Q. Aren’t you worried about the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS because of your partner?

Yes, and no. I am not at any risk because my partner takes his antiretroviral medication regularly, so the chances of him passing on the virus are drastically low. And since we’ve made a conscious choice to have protected sex, it’s nearly impossible for me to test HIV+. Of course, if we both indulge in unprotected sex, the risk of transmitting HIV is our own responsibility.

Q. Why do you want to be with an HIV+ person when you can find an HIV- partner? Won’t it be easier to live with someone just like you?

Can you assure me that an HIV- person might not develop any life-threatening disease or ailment in near future? Or I will never get hit by a bus and become permanently incapacitated? Can you guarantee that our beloved ones won’t develop a mental condition requiring lifelong care? You love someone for who they are, not for what they have. Vishwa is more than just his HIV status and I am more than just my HIV status.

Our love defines what we mean for each other – it goes above and beyond our HIV status, gender or sexual identity.

Q. What would you say to someone who is in love with an HIV+ person?

Love them for who they are. Don’t let your own fear of HIV stand in the way of your love. Overcome your fear with knowledge and information. Do not consider it a favour or an act of charity to love someone who is HIV+. Love the person the way they want to be loved, the way they feel loved.

(…to be continued)
